Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
