Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
