Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
