Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
