Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
