Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
