Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
