Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
