Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
