Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
