Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
