Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
