Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
