Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps.
