Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
