Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
