Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
