Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
