Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
