Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
