Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
