Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
