Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
