Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
