Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
