Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
