Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
